Pls let mw know the resolution for same if you know. If you are remotely computer savvy you realized that all you did was backup the file so VMware will no longer use it. There was however another version of the file called datastores.xml.default. Apparently, the installer won't repair unless the versions match exactly, either. see here

The service Vmwware host agent started and everything is just working. I then opened the xmldefault version of it and saved it as datastores.xml and the service started up no problem. After much frustration trying many solutions on the internet I found one that worked.

Damn these computer things annoy me - I mean you would never put up with this sort of behaviour from your TV or fridge, they would be in a skip by now.
