Several people here have mentioned data recovery programs. It appears in the sidebar under the Macintosh HD. It is not formatted to switch from Macs to PCs so therefore I have never connected it to a PC.It is formatted for a Mac OS X (Journaled). If you have a HFS+ partition, then Data loss itself isn't a problem, but on FAT or NTFS partitions, you can definitely lose Data. Source
